My wife and I like to drink Trader Vic’s premixed Mai Tai’s, but we like to drink them cold. My wife has a favorite 10oz low ball tumbler that she likes to use for her Mai Tai’s, but it is glass and the ice tends to melt a bit quick, watering down the Mai Tais. When RTIC ran a sale on their [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DMWMQOU” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]10oz tumblers[/easyazon_link] I knew I had to get in on that action. For the sake of an apples to apples comparison I wanted to replicate my Best Pint Glass challenge.
As a reminder, I started out with seven ice cubes in each glass, a half hour later I poured the contents into a measuring glass, so I could see the amount of ice that was left over and then measures volume of water that melted from the ice.
The Glass Tumbler – ~75ml melted
These are your standard glass tumblers, you can find them just about everywhere and they have been getting the job done for over a century. If you like to really evaluate the aesthetics of your drink, you can’t get any better than glass. But if you live in a warm humid climate and you use ice, plan on using coasters and cleaning up puddles before it ruins your wood furniture.
Pros:
Cheap
Can be chilled in the Freezer
Dishwasher Safe
Fits nicely in your hand
Cons:
Doesn’t insulate well
Condensation
RTIC Low Ball Tumbler – ~15ml melted
RTIC is pretty new on the scene and has built their brand around offering quality coolers comparable to the luxury cooler brand at a fraction of the price. They have expanded their line to include drinkware. These 10oz tumblers come with a plastic lid that helps to insulate the contents really, really, well! In fact when I ran my study for the first time, I kept the lid on, after 30 minutes no measurable amount of water had melted. To make a more equitable comparison, I removed the lid from the tumbler and repeated the study. These are BPA free because they are made of metal, but cannot be frozen or washed in the dishwasher, because it can damage the vacuum. I have read some reviews complaining about the long term durability of the tumblers, but so far so good. You can keep these out on any surface without being afraid of causing damage, there will be no condensation, if there is, you know your vacuum is shot. For what it is worth, they don’t ship to Hawaii which is a real bummer, I had to have my wife smuggle these back after a trip to the mainland. Otherwise, I am quite pleased with this RTIC product.
Pros:
More expensive then glass
No Condensation
Durable Material
Lids are available
Cons:
Vacuum can break
Cannot be pre-chilled
Not Dishwasher Safe
Larger than a standard tumbler
