Bottom Line: [easyazon_link identifier=”B01FSZJ6XI” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Angry Birds[/easyazon_link] is not highbrow humor, but the story is tolerable, the kids loved it and there were quite a few laughs from the adults as well. This is a good option for a family friendly Backyard Movie Night.
When I first heard they were making an [easyazon_link identifier=”B01EK44M64″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Angry Birds movie[/easyazon_link], I remember rolling my eyes and wondering how much blood could they squeeze from this turnip? Then I saw the trailer and realized that Jason Sudeikis was the voice of the main character, he has become one my favorite actors in recent years, and my interest was piqued. I just[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”500″ identifier=”B01EK44M64″ locale=”US” localize=”y” nw=”y” src=”http://www.backyardmovies.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/51KF2B3DbznL.jpg” tag=”backyardmov05-20″ width=”405″] did a quick search on IMDB and this cartoon has a ton of heavy hitters on the cast. The trailer was funny, the graphics looked great, and they were releasing it in 3D, so I decided this would be a good film for a Backyard Movie night later on. To ensure I got the best deal on it, I pre-ordered through Amazon.
I think everyone on the planet at some point had the Angry Birds game on their phone or at least knew it was a video game. If you didn’t have the game, the point was to fling birds at structures built by green pigs with the aim of knocking over the structures and destroying the pigs below them. I was skeptical about how this would translate into a coherent storyline, but I have to say the writers pulled it off. The main character is “Red”, a bird that has anger management issues who lives on happy “Bird Island”. Due to an uncontrolled emotional outburst, he is enrolled into a court appointed anger management course with several other characters. While he is participating in the course, a mysterious ship shows up to the island crewed by green pigs who promise goodwill and friendship, but Red suspects there is more than meets the eye with the pigs. It ain’t Shakespeare, but it was pretty funny and for the most part stayed true to the concept of the game.
There were a few play on words that alluded to profanity “i.e. this is flocking ridiculous” etc. Also, I am not a huge fan of bathroom humor and there is a pretty prolonged scene associated with urination that I could have done without. This got big laughs with the kids though.
The animation was awesome and the film did a great job of integrating the 3D into it. It was released with both [easyazon_link identifier=”B01G7JFKJ8″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]4K and 3D versions in the same bundle[/easyazon_link] and even though I haven’t seen the 4K version yet, I am sure it is mind blowing. There were a lot of gags written into the film designed specifically to take advantage of the 3D, which I always appreciate. The film was also sufficiently bright enough to offset the darker tint on the 3D glasses. Because of the clarity and brightness of the digital animation, this is a good film to show off the capability of your Backyard Movie Theater setup.
If you are looking for a family friendly flick for your next Backyard Movie Night, look no further, [easyazon_link identifier=”B01EK44M64″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Angry Birds[/easyazon_link] has something for both the kids and the adults alike.
