First, a quick geography lesson, Kilauea is an active volcano on the island of Hawaii and the centerpiece of Volcano National Park. The volcano has been pretty active recently offering some spectacular views from the visitor’s center.
Why do I bring this up? Because like its namesake the Kilauea Fire product line brings the heat! I got a bottle of the Kilauea Fire BBQ sauce that I used on some grilled spareribs that I made the other day. Again, I don’t like to grill my ribs, but I am in temporary housing and had to use the tools I had on hand.
Consistency: This BBQ sauce is much thicker than lava it seeks to emulate. Even at room temperature, it doesn’t flow very freely. It sits on the meat more like a jelly, than a sauce. I didn’t have a brush, so I had to pour the sauce on, and even in the high heat, it just sat there until spread. Once it got steamed in the foil pouch I was using, it thinned out considerably
Flavor: This is a relatively sweet sauce. But the most prominent thing about it is the heat….this isn’t just spicy…this is hot! This sauce isn’t going to be for everyone, maybe too hot for most, but I don’t think it is unbearable. The Kilauea Fire BBQ sauce held up really well to being grilled at high temperature, though it didn’t cling to the meat once it warmed up, it also didn’t burn. I think the flavor profile would work well with pork and chicken, but probably isn’t a good fit for beef. I can easily imagine a whole mess of chicken wings with this sauce.
Where to buy: The BBQ sauce isn’t currently listed on their site, not sure if it has been discontinued, but you can see Kilauea Fire’s other products here.
Conclusion: 3.75/5, I am still figuring out my scoring system. My wife and I actually preferred this sauce over Pappy’s Original BBQ Sauce on the ribs, but due to the thick consistency and heat that will be overpowering for most, I have docked it a few points.
