Since moving to Washington State, I have fallen hard for the humble huckleberry. This tart little berry grows wild in the forests of WA, ID, and MT. It takes a lot of picking to pull together any appreciable amount of huckleberries, but what they lack in size, they make up for in flavor. I have been on a journey of exploration to discover new and creative uses for the huckleberry, pancakes, muffins, scones, BBQ sauces, milkshakes, ice cream, and now Hard Cider.
A co-worker turned me on to this cider and I was instantly a fan. One Tree Cider is based out of Spokane, WA, so it is neat to see them using local ingredients.
The dark purple color is a little surprising when you poor it into a glass for the first time. The huckleberry interacts with the apple cider nicely and the result is both tart and sweet. My wife thought it tasted a bit like grape juice, but I wonder if the appearance of the drink didn’t help inform that perception. If you prefer a drier cider, this probably isn’t a good choice for you. The carbonation is fairly delicate, there isn’t much of a carbonic bite. I don’t think that this would be a very sessionable beverage due to the sweetness, which is good because at 6.7% ABV it could be easy to over do it.
One Tree Cider’s Huckleberry would pair nicely with pork or chicken. I had it with pork chops but I could see it going exceptionally well with some good BBQ ribs.
