Bottom Line: [easyazon_link identifier=”B01I2FFL58″ locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Ghostbusters[/easyazon_link] is a fun watch. The 3D is masterfully used and it will make you smile, even if it falls short of its predecessors.
I am a huge [easyazon_link identifier=”B01I03E1G2″ locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Ghostbusters[/easyazon_link]fan and the minute I found out they were doing the reboot in 3D, I knew I was going to buy it, so I didn’t bother to see it in the Theaters. So I was pretty excited when it finally came in the mail from Amazon. The plot follows the[easyazon_link identifier=”B00170GXYO” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]original Ghostbusters[/easyazon_link], a rag-tag group of misfits figures out that ghosts actually exists, things start to get out of control as the city clamps down on the Ghostbusters, then things get so chaotic that everyone is forced to rely on our heroes to save the day. The story-line is similar enough that it will feel familiar, but different enough you don’t feel compelled to compare it directly with the original.
I am a big fan of all of the members of the cast: Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, and Jones. I have enjoyed their work on [easyazon_link identifier=”B005O716IO” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Bridesmaids[/easyazon_link] and on Saturday Night Live so I was really looking forward to this movie. Ironically enough, I don’t think the material let the cast play to their strengths, with Jones being the exception. McCarthy in particular excels in big over the top, physical comedy roles, but she was a bit subdued in this role. Again, the movie avoids a one for one replication of the original movie, but I found myself missing the Bill Murray character. The original ensemble had a chemistry that I think is missing in this film and I found myself trying to figure out who was who. I also gained a greater appreciation for what Murray’s Dr. Peter Venkman brought to the film. So there was a lot of online trolling about the all female reboot and I have to say I think it largely excelled. I never got a hint of an agenda or undercurrent of “girl-power”. It felt very organic to me and never made me want to roll my eyes like some other films. I think that it is cool that perhaps my daughter can relate to this movie the same way I related to the original.
The movie made me smile and enjoyed the film, but I don’t think I ever laughed out loud.
The film is beautifully shot and the 3D is really well done. Many 3D films provide you with a lot of depth, but don’t take advantage of making it look like things are flying out of the screen at you. Ghostbusters takes advantage of this effect and it is one that I really enjoy. The computer rendered images are beautiful and the film is nice and bright. It feels like a much cleaner film than the original, lacking the grit of old New York.
The film is rated PG-13 and other than a few bawdy jokes that I think will go over the head of younger viewers and just a little bit of language, I am not sure why it is PG-13. I let my daughter watch it and she was neither too scared, nor permanently scarred by the experience. I think this would be an acceptable film for a neighborhood party and no one but the most conservative, will leave offended.
With Halloween just around the corner, this is a great film to add to your rotation.
