The other day I was surfing the net and I came across a food blogger who was writing about the virtues of gochujang, which a
spicy Korean chili paste. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find
that site again, but it got into my head. I am a fan of Korean food, but haven’t really tried making it at home, but this blogger made it sound so easy, tasty and delicious. Fortunately, I was able to source gochujang locally, but if you aren’t so luck you can find it [easyazon_link identifier=”B00O0WI1ZA” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]here[/easyazon_link].
I came across the following recipe at foodwithfamily.com, but decided to modify it for the pieces of sirloin I picked up from the store.
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
3lbs of Sirloin
8 cloves garlic, peeled and minced or pressed through a garlic press
2 Tsp powdered ginger
1/3 cup honey, brown sugar, or coconut sugar
1/3 cup low sodium soy sauce
1/3 cup unsweetened juice
3 tablespoons of gochujang
Steps:
1) Combine all the ingredients into a Ziploc bag
2) Add the meat and allow to marinate for at least 2 hours, overnight would be best.
3) Grill on a very hot grill, approximately 2-3 minutes each side.
4) Allow to rest
To go with the beef, I decided to stick with the Korean theme and made baby bok choy. I didn’t want to dirty any more dishes, so I decided to use the grill. I found this recipe for grilled Bok Choy at allrecipes and modified it for Baby Bok Choy.
Ingredients:
2.5 lbs of Baby Bok Choy
¼ Cup of Melted Butter
1/8 tsp Paprika
1/8 tsp Black Pepper
1/8 tsp Garlic Powder
Seasoning Salt
Steps:
1) Combine the butter, paprika, black pepper, and garlic powder
2) Cut the heads of Baby Bok Choy into halves
3) Sprinkle the Seasoning Salt onto the Baby Bok Choy halves
4) Brush the butter mixture onto one side of the Baby Bok Choy
5) Place the buttered side down on a hot grill for 30 seconds
6) Butter the opposite side then flip the Baby Bok Choy and cook for another 30 seconds
I used my [easyazon_link identifier=”B00FLYWNYQ” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Instant Pot[/easyazon_link] to make some Jasmine rice, which complimented the meat and
vegetables perfectly. The meal came together really nicely, lots of bold flavors and it was pretty healthy to boot! If you are looking to branch out, try something new, I can’t recommend this meal enough.
