BOTTOM LINE: The Luminoodle Base Camp is a flexible lighting option that is bright enough to provide safety lighting while also setting the mood.
I bought the[easyazon_link identifier=”B01G7SU4MM” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Luminoodle BaseCamp[/easyazon_link]by Power Practical when it was being funded through Kickstarter months ago. I have had it for months, but didn’t have much of an opportunity to break it out. I bought it for the express purpose of using it while we were camping, but we weren’t doing much camping in Hawaii. Now that we are back in the continental US and spending our time camping, I have gotten to use it a few times and wanted to share it with you. I think its flexibility makes it an amazing lighting solution for outdoor movie theaters.
THE BASICS:
The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01G7SU4MM” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Luminoodle BaseCamp[/easyazon_link] is a 20’ LED rope light that is super thin and super flexible. It features 14 different colors and can be controlled with controller on the light rope or with the included remote controller. The light puts out a solid 3000 lumens, that is bright, but not blinding. There is also the ability to dim the lights, not to mention a variety of strobe modes.
The lights can be powered with 120V plug or by using a portable power option, of which Power Practical sells a nice one, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B06XX5XYS9″ locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Pronto[/easyazon_link]. Since this is an LED light, you get a lot of light for a long time, even with portable power solutions. Of course it will depend on the size of the battery pack you are using.
The construction is very solid and the lights seem very resilient to low levels of abuse. The construction is also pretty weatherproof, so I don’t have any concerns exposing this light to the elements.
It comes with a very convenient and compact pouch and spool that makes for easy storage. The Base Camp also comes with a series of latches that make it easier to put up.
USES:
I like to run my lights along the awning on my camper with the colored lights on steady state, it lights up the area without being as disruptive to other campers as a white light might be. I can even show movies on the camper with my little projector, without fear of the image being washed out. I think it would be very good for lighting paths, obstacles, or outlining your screen during movie time.
I know there are much cheaper lighting options out there, but for the price I think the Luminoodle BaseCamp is a great combination of flexibility, portability, construction, and utility.
