I helped line the pockets of Connor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather by purchasing their obscenely overpriced PPV. But I have to say, it was a hell of a fight and I enjoyed watching it. It was also my first opportunity to break the screen out and doing an outside movie in the 2017 summer season, as I explained in an earlier post, the long summer days here in Washington state, make it very difficult to host anything at a reasonable time.
We were doing an old-fashioned neighborhood block party to celebrate the end of summer, before everyone heads out for the holiday weekend. It was a great time!
A quick recap of events though:
Before shelling out my cash, I made sure it would be dark enough before fight time, by using the techniques detailed here.
I used my [easyazon_link identifier=”B00DH5FS3Y” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Gemmy Deluxe Movie Screen[/easyazon_link], my I[easyazon_link identifier=”B01LZJVP6H” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]on Block Rocker Speaker[/easyazon_link], and my [easyazon_link identifier=”B00U3FPN4U” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Amazon Firestick[/easyazon_link].
I ordered the PPV through UFC and showed the event using methods detailed here.
It was pretty early when we got started (1.5 hours before sundown), so I aligned the screen so as to block out the sun, creating a long shadow. I moved the projector very close to the screen, this resulted in a ~50” image that could be seen well before sundown. While less than ideal, it made sure we didn’t miss a moment of the undercards, and it was very watchable. As the ambient light got dimmer, I would move the projector further back until we filled the screen in time for the main event.
It was nice to get back to backyard movies, get the equipment out, knock the rust off and validate some of the ideas presented here. I also have a whole new group of friends looking forward to more outdoor theater events.
