Bottom Line: [easyazon_link identifier=”B01F5ZY596″ locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]”The Nice Guys”[/easyazon_link] probably won’t receive any Academy Awards, but I thought it was a fun flick for adults and that it should have gotten more attention than it did.
First, let me say, I didn’t watch this movie with my backyard theater, but I really liked it, so I wanted to share it with others.
Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling star in the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01F5ZY596″ locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]”The Nice Guys”[/easyazon_link], which takes place in LA in the early 1980’s. The attempt to recreate the feel of the period are part of the fun of this movie. Ryan Gosling is a single dad and questionably competent private eye, who is trying to keep his alcoholism in check, make ends meet, and raise his precocious daughter. Russell Crowe is a tough guy for hire, doing debt collection and personal protection gigs, who secretly hopes to do something less morally nebulous. Circumstance brings the two main characters together to investigate the mysterious death of a porn star, which as you might have guessed, uncovers a broader conspiracy. Both Crowe and Gosling bring a lot to their roles and I found the characters to be very likable and somewhat relatable. The screenwriting is great. The dialogue was witty, the plot had enough twists to keep me guessing, the action kept my attention, and the whole affair was irreverent, never taking itself too seriously.
Parental Concerns/Backyard Movie Appropriateness: This is definitely an “R” rated movie, it has a fair amount of profanity and nudity. So if your neighbors can see your screen, probably not a good fit for outside. There is also a fair amount of violence, but nothing excessively gory. In fact I wouldn’t say the profanity, nudity, or violence were gratuitous, just more than I would feel comfortable thrusting on my neighbors.
This movie received praise from the critics when it was released and I can see why. I think it just got overshadowed by other movies during the release. I don’t know that I would classify it as a “must see”, but my wife and I really, really enjoyed!
