Like a Weber Kettle Grill, one of the limitations that my Kamado has is that it is difficult to reload
charcoal after it is already hot. It has a grate that swings open, but you still have to touch the hot grate to open it up. I have also added a variety of accessories that need to be moved after they are scorching hot, like the [easyazon_link identifier=”B013T0EWBU” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″ popups=”n”]Himalayan Salt Plate[/easyazon_link], Baking Steel, and [easyazon_link identifier=”B01CCHXXHA” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″ popups=”n”]Joetisserie[/easyazon_link]. I have [easyazon_link identifier=”B00ON7HNM4″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″ popups=”n”]silicon gloves[/easyazon_link] that are great for moving meat on and off the grill, but offer relatively little in terms of thermal protection. I have some woven cotton and nomex gloves, but while they offer more in the way of thermal protection, once they get grease on them they are difficult to clean and look disgusting. I have been using leather work gloves to make adjustments on the grill, again easier to clean than the cloth gloves, but again they offer minimal thermal protection.
I recently saw someone recommend [easyazon_link identifier=”B000MRQAJG” locale=”US”
nw=”y” tag=”backyardmov05-20″ popups=”n”]welding gloves[/easyazon_link] for BBQing, it seemed so obvious, why hadn’t I thought of the ease earlier?
I bought this pair from Amazon. They work great, my hands are protected all the way up to the forearm. You never know when you might accidentally graze something when you aren’t paying attention, so the added protection is nice. They are a little bulky, so you won’t be able to do anything that requires fine motor skills. Using them I was able to reach directly into the coals to remove the meat when making Lomo al Trapo this past weekend. They are getting a little dirty from handling the accessories and since they are suede I can’t clean them, but since they were a dark color to begin with, it isn’t an issue for me. Because I can’t clean them, I don’t think I would want to handle food with them, I will leave that job for my silicone gloves.
Pros:
– Welding gloves offer thermal protection and have the toughness of leather
– Not as gross looking as the cloth gloves after they come in contact with blackened animal fats.
– Offer protection for the entire forearm
– Affordable Option
Cons:
– Difficult to clean
– Cumbersome to move in
I think that the welding gloves are a much better option than more expensive specialty BBQing gloves. While I still like the silicone gloves for handling food because of their ease of cleaning, these gloves are great for everything else.
